Automating Digital Signage With Custom API Integrations

The most expensive part of digital signage is not the hardware or the software. It is the person who has to log in every morning and change the slides. Custom API integrations remove that person from the loop entirely, so your screens pull live data straight from the systems you already use.

What an API integration actually does

An API is simply a doorway into another system's data. Your point-of-sale knows what is in stock and what it costs. Your ERP knows today's production numbers. Your scheduling system knows which room is booked next. An integration connects that doorway to your signage layout so a price change, a delay, or a new number appears on screen within seconds — with no one touching the content manager.

Aurora's development team builds these integrations directly, which means we are not limited to a list of prebuilt connectors. If a system can expose data through an API, a database query, a feed, or even a scheduled file drop, we can drive a screen with it.

What customers automate most often

Menu boards. Prices, item availability, day-parting, and 86'd items pulled from the POS. Breakfast rolls off and lunch rolls on at a set time, and a sold-out item grays itself out automatically.

Airport and transit boards. Arrival and departure times, gate changes, delays, and traffic conditions fed from live transportation data so travelers always see current information.

Production and quality dashboards. Output versus target, downtime, scrap rates, and safety day counts pulled from the ERP or MES and posted on the plant floor and in the break room.

Healthcare wait times and queueing. Current wait, room readiness, and patient-flow messaging tied into the scheduling system.

Retail pricing and promotions. Regional pricing, loyalty offers, and inventory-driven promotions that change per store without a per-store content update.

Corporate KPIs and room booking. Sales pipeline, support metrics, and conference room availability drawn from your CRM, help desk, or calendar system.

Weather, alerts, and emergency takeover. Local conditions in a corner widget, plus an instant full-screen takeover for severe weather, lockdowns, or evacuation instructions.

How we build it

We start by identifying the source of truth for each piece of content and how often it needs to refresh. Some data is fine on a fifteen-minute poll; a departure board is not. From there we map the fields you want on screen, build the connector, and design a layout that handles the edge cases — missing data, a source going offline, a value that suddenly gets very long. The screen should degrade gracefully, not display an error.

Once it is live, the integration runs on its own. Content updates itself, screens stay accurate, and your team gets its mornings back.

Why automation changes the business case

Manual signage has a hidden recurring cost: staff time, plus the cost of wrong information sitting on a screen because nobody got to it. Automated content flips that. The data is always current, the labor drops to near zero, and the network can grow from five screens to five hundred without adding a single person to maintain it.

If you have a system you would like your screens to talk to — POS, ERP, CRM, scheduling, transit data, or something custom — reach out at sales@auroradigitalsignage.com and we will scope the integration with you.
